The Story Behind Mamak Goreng

The story of Mamak Goreng is one of humble beginnings, shared passions, and a deep love for Malaysian cuisine. It all began with Rao, the owner, whose entrepreneurial spirit was ignited at the young age of 11. Growing up near Hot Springs, Setapak, Rao spent his childhood helping his parents run their roadside coffee shop. It was there that he learned how to make teh tarik and serve roti canai, skills that would later shape his journey in the food business. He fondly remembers waking up at 5 a.m. to help his mother pack nasi lemak, which they sold at the Air Panas market. His early experiences at the Air Panas Secondary Girls School’s canteen taught him the value of hard work and the joy of sharing food with a community.

On the other side of this story is Jay, Rao’s wife. Jay’s culinary roots run deep, having gained her first knowledge of food during her home science lessons in secondary school. Growing up in a large family, she spent countless hours in the kitchen, observing and helping her mother prepare meals for the family. This not only gave her a love for cooking but also an understanding of how food could bring people together.

In 2012, Rao and Jay decided to combine their love for food and their entrepreneurial spirit. After migrating to Australia, they started a humble food stall at the Canning Vale Sunday market. What started as a small venture quickly grew, and soon they found themselves opening a restaurant in Fremantle Markets. As their reputation for serving authentic, flavourful Malaysian food spread, they moved to a larger restaurant in Thornlie.

In time, the couple decided to rebrand their growing business to “Mamak Goreng,” a name that would capture the essence of their culinary offerings. Their first outlet opened in Maddington Central Shopping Centre, and thanks to the unwavering support from their loyal customers, they expanded with a second outlet at Armadale Central Shopping Centre.

Today, Mamak Goreng is a testament to Rao and Jay’s shared vision and dedication. Every dish they serve is rooted in the memories of their early experiences, and together, they have created a place where people can enjoy the comforting, vibrant flavours of Malaysian street food. Mamak Goreng is not just a restaurant—it’s a labor of love, built on a foundation of family, tradition, and a passion for bringing people together through food.
